For patients with irregular corneas, standard glasses or soft contacts simply cannot provide clear vision. The light scatters instead of focusing. Medical necessity lenses create a new, smooth optical surface over the irregular eye, often restoring vision to 20/20.
A progressive thinning condition where the cornea bulges into a cone shape.
Rare complications from refractive surgery leading to corneal instability.
Correcting high irregularity after a corneal transplant (PKP) surgery.

For many of our patients, these lenses are not just a luxury—they are a lifeline. We frequently see patients who were told they would "never see clearly again" become ecstatic when they put on a Scleral lens and read the 20/20 line for the first time in years.
"The improvement in Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) is often dramatic, restoring the ability to drive, work, and live independently."
Dr. Fouladian utilizes the world's most advanced lens designs to customize the fit for your unique corneal shape.
Small Diameter RGP
Precision rigid lenses for patients who require maximum breathability or have specific corneal needs where sclerals are not indicated.
NovaKone®
Bausch + Lomb / Alden
A soft lens specifically designed for keratoconus, offering comfort for those who cannot tolerate rigid materials.
Because every irregular cornea is unique like a fingerprint, these lenses cannot be mass-produced.
This is a process, not a single appointment. Dr. Fouladian may need to modify the fit several times to ensure the lens vaults over the cornea perfectly without touching the delicate tissue.
Scleral lenses are larger than standard contacts. We provide specialized, one-on-one training on proper Insertion and Removal techniques to ensure you can handle them safely and confidently.
Due to the complexity and custom manufacturing, these fittings are more expensive than standard exams. However, at Westwood & Montrose Eye Center, we strive to keep our fees affordable and transparent, often working with vision plans that cover "medically necessary" lenses.
To avoid eye infections and trauma, Dr. Fouladian follows these patients very closely. An ill-fitting lens on a compromised cornea can cause scarring or rejection.
Our Recommendation:
A yearly comprehensive exam and yearly new lenses are highly recommended. Old lenses can warp or scratch, increasing the risk of infection and corneal scarring.
