Astigmatism Correction

Toric Contact Lenses

Stable, crisp vision for eyes that aren't perfectly round.

The "Football" Eye

Astigmatism is a common refractive error where the cornea is shaped more like a football than a basketball. This irregular curvature causes light to focus on two different points in the eye, leading to blurred or stretched vision at all distances.

Standard spherical lenses cannot fully correct this because they have the same power all around. You need a lens with two different powers in specific orientations—a Toric Lens.

Toric lenses are weighted to stay in position.

The Challenge: Rotation

Because a Toric lens has specific powers in specific places, it must not rotate when you blink. If it shifts even 5 degrees, your vision will blur instantly.

Prism Ballast

The lens is slightly thicker at the bottom, using gravity to keep it oriented correctly.

Blink Stabilization

Uses the natural pressure of your eyelids during a blink to realign the lens instantly.

Precision Balance

Optimized thickness zones minimize interaction with the lower lid for stable vision.

The Art of Fitting

Precision Refraction Beyond the Machine

At Westwood & Montrose Eye Center, Dr. Jilber Fouladian believes that fitting toric lenses is as much an art as it is a science. While the phoropter (the exam machine) provides a mathematical starting point, it does not account for how a lens physically settles and rotates on your unique eye shape.

Dr. Fouladian pays meticulous attention to the art of refraction, often manually modifying the automated prescription to compensate for lens rotation. He discusses all options with you, ensuring you leave not just seeing better, but feeling comfortable.
